Is Uber Cheaper Than a Taxi?

Any mode of transportation we choose has its own set of expenses that come along with it. Some modes of transportation can be considered more costly than others and the timing and destination involved will help you determine the best and least expensive way to travel.

Generally, if we are traveling locally and don’t have or use a car we may find ourselves using a traditional taxi or a ride-share app, unless of course we hitch a ride from our best friend.

Many of you may wonder which is the least expensive, the traditional taxi or the Uber taxi?

When it comes to short distances in travel a traditional taxi will by far be less expensive than the Uber taxi. However, if your travels take you a bit further than local or close to home than the Uber taxi will be less expensive in this arena.

At certain times, like high demand periods, Uber drivers get to charge a premium to passengers to keep more drivers behind the wheel. What this means is that during these high periods the traditional taxi will be a more economical form of transportation while Uber drivers at this time will be more costly.

The population of your area as well as the time of day all factor into whether it is a high demand time. If is a high traffic city, which is always demanding than this can be the case nearly all the time. You would then expect the Uber to be more expensive most of the time.

You may think it would be cheaper to take an Uber taxi as opposed to traditional taxi since Uber doesn’t accept tipping but in most cases that still usually doesn’t make much difference.

Weather and traffic can factor into the price of Uber and how much so may be surprising. They give you an estimated price when you reserve with the app, but you might find yourself being surprised with a huge fare if you sit in an extra 20 minutes of traffic or run into severe weather. The traditional taxi runs on fixed fare schedules or meters, so you know what you’re getting.

Thankfully in today’s modern tech world we also have apps that can assist a traveler in determining if the price is cheaper for one way of travel versus the other. These can help assist you in choosing at a specific time which is better.

While there are many factors in choosing which way you like to travel, expense is just one of them. Ease of use, knowledge of neighborhoods and travel areas as well as other factors can help determine which way to travel is best for you.

To determine which mode of transportation is less expensive than the other is difficult to do because of a variety of situations and methods that make them competitive but vastly different. Each time you choose to travel using the ride-share apps that assist in determining which is cheaper as well as a little research will help you choose which way to go.
